Month-End Close for a Solo Bookkeeper: March Stays March

Search month end close checklist small business and you get CPA blogs and Excel PDFs. Print it, check it, lose it, print it again in April.

A printable is a photocopy. You don't need another one.

Month-end isn't a repeating task. It's a new period every time.

The close is the same. The period is not.

Bank recs. Prepaid. Payroll accruals. Sales tax. Deferred items. Whatever your firm actually runs, you already know the steps. Last month has to remain last month while this month starts clean.

A recurring task overwrites the instance. An Excel checklist doesn't remember which recon you deferred.

March close should stay March.

One template, twelve labelled closes

Save the close once. Each month gets its own run, named as that period. April is a fresh run, not an overwrite. Skipped the prepaid rec in March? March still shows it empty.

Solo / tiny firm: one checklist, a fresh period every time, history per client. "Did we actually do this last month?" should be a dated run, not a Slack thread.

This is not accounting software

Books stay in QBO or Xero. This is the close procedure with a period label and a record. Same pattern for weekly AP, quarterly estimates, year-end.
